Overview
A "resource" is any type of static information that you add to your Moodle course—for example, a web page, a link or a text or image file.
This page tells you how to create resources, how to organise your resource list, and how to access a resource for editing and how to delete a resource. It also (see Advanced guide) lists the resources that are available for inclusion in your course.
To start thinking about how you might use resources in your course, visit the page What Can You Do with Moodle?
When to use
Use a resource for any kind of non-interactive content in your Moodle course. When you create a resource, a link displays on your course home page so your students can identify (by the icon) the type of resource it is (e.g. book,
folder,
page) and access it.
Benefits
Although a Moodle course can be much more than just a repository for course resources, it does fulfil this function as well. A resource can be as complex as a Book constructed entirely within the course, or as straightforward as a reference list or a link to a useful website for your students to consult.
Use a variety of resources to engage students' interest in the course.
Guide
Step by step instructions

- Create a resource by duplicating
- Organise the resource/activity list
- Edit a resource
- Delete a resource
Create a resource—basic
- Click Turn editing on at the top right of the page
.
- On the course home page, in the appropriate section, click Add an activity or resource.
- In the Add an activity or resource window, select the activity you want to use in the activity chooser.
- On the Adding a new [chosen resource] page, complete the mandatory fields and any additional fields that are appropriate to the resource. Note that for the following activities, you can opt (using the Display description... check box) to have the activity Introduction text display below the link on the course home page: Folder, Forum, Glossary, IMS Content Package, Page, URL. Take care not to over-use this option.
- Click Save and return to course to view the new resource in the content list on the course home page, or Save and display to preview the resource.
Create a resource by duplicating
Rather than creating each resource from scratch, you can save time by copying an existing resource and modifying it. To duplicate a resource:
- On the course home page, click Turn editing on
.
- Click the Edit dropdown next to the resource and select
Duplicate. The resource is duplicated.
- Change the name first, so that it is clear on the course home page which is the modified copy of the resource. (You can also do this from the course home page, by clicking the duplicate copy's Edit title icon
.
- To edit the duplicated resource, click the Edit dropdown next to the resource and select Edit settings.
Organise the resource/activity list
To organise the resources and activities list, create labels and use indenting:
- To indent the resource in the section’s content list, click the Move Right icon
.
- To move the resource up or down the list, click and hold the Move icon
and drag the item to the desired position.
It is recommended that you add an 'Activities' block to your course so that students can easily navigate to a complete list of all resources in your course.
Note that the Activities block provides students with a list of all activities and resources in a course in one accessible location.
Edit a resource
To edit a resource:
- Click Turn editing on at the top right of the page
.
- Next to the appropriate resource, click the Edit dropdown and select
Edit settings.
- On the Updating page, make the necessary changes. (To see the text editor function buttons, click the Toolbar Toggle button.)
- Click Save and return to course to save your changes, or Save and display to view the changed resource.
Delete a resource
To delete a resource:
- Click Turn editing on at the top right of the page
.
- Next to the appropriate resource, click the Edit dropdown, and select
Delete.
- A confirmation dialog box displays. Click OK.
