Deleting a Moodle Course

Deleting a Moodle course, whether it is assessable or non-assessable, is an administrative process performed by the school or faculty TELT administrator. A lecturer or other staff member must contact their TELT administrator to request that a Moodle course be deleted.

When is a Moodle course deleted?

Valid reasons for deleting a Moodle course include the following:

  • A course was created but not used, perhaps because 2 course codes were merged, or because of course cancellations.
  • Multiple Moodle courses were accidentally created in myUNSW, and the duplicate courses need to be deleted.
  • A non-assessable course has reached the end of its life, has been appropriately backed up, and is no longer required.

This page describes the processes of:

Assessable course deletion

Only delete an assessable Moodle course if it was incorrectly created or never used, prior to start of semester.

The process of deleting an assessable course consists of the following steps.

  1. A staff member contacts the TELT Administrator with a deletion request.
  2. The TELT Administrator logs into Moodle and backs up the course (if unique content is present)—visit our Moodle backup page for assistance.
  3. The TELT Administrator logs into myUNSW, deletes the course in the Academic Admin tab and waits 24 hours for the change to take effect
  4. The TELT Administrator contacts UNSW IT, requesting the Moodle course to be deleted, confirming that they have:
    1. backed up the Moodle course
    2. deleted the Moodle course in myUNSW
    3. waited 24 hours.
  5. UNSW IT will escalate the request to the LMS&I team within PVCESE to delete the course

Non-assessable course deletion

Non-assessable Moodle courses (e.g. Sandpit, Staff Training Course) should be deleted if the course was incorrectly created or never used, or if it has reached the end of its life and the content is no longer required.

The process of deleting a non-assessable course consists of the following steps.

  1. A staff member contacts the TELT Administrator with a deletion request.
  2. The TELT Administrator logs into Moodle and backs up the course (if unique content is present)—visit our Moodle Backup page for assistance.
  3. The TELT Administrator contacts UNSW IT, requesting the Moodle course to be deleted, confirming that they have backed up the Moodle course.
  4. UNSW IT will escalate the request to the LMS&I team within PVCESE to delete the course
If you do not have a TELT Administrator, or if they have no connection to this course, please raise the request anyway but confirm that you are responsible for the course.
