Edit Your Moodle Course

Overview

This page gives you instructions on how to enter the editing mode in Moodle.

It also lists the editing icons available to you, and describes what you can do with them.

 

When to use

Look through this page before you begin working in Moodle, to familiarise yourself with the icons commonly used throughout Moodle.

Benefits

Familiarising yourself with the Moodle editing icons will speed up your orientation process and increase your confidence when you first begin working in Moodle.

Step by step instructions

Turn editing on

  1. Click Turn editing on at the top right of the page  Turn editing on button.
  2. Icons for editing tasks are found in the Edit drop-down button located beside the activity or resource. Edit drop down button The resource/activity settings are then displayed.

With editing turned on, you can also add activities and resources to your course using the Add an activity or resource link at the bottom right of each page section: Add activity/resource button

Editing icons and their uses

Block Icons

Icon Icon name Description
Hide icon Hide Make the block invisible to students. (In instructor edit view, a Show icon hide icon will display and the block will be greyed out. Click the Show icon to re-display the block.)
Configuration icon Configuration Specify where and how the block displays on the page.
Delete icon Delete Remove the block. (A confirmation dialog box will not display.)
M2_move_block.jpg Move Move the block up or down. This icon displays as the mouse pointer, when the pointer is located in the header row of a block. Click and drag the block to the desired location.
hide icon Hide [block name] block Minimises the block so that only the block heading displays. To view the block content, the user clicks the settings icon Configuration icon and clicks, Show [block name] block.

Section Icons—Topic/Weekly outline

Icon Icon name Description
Settings icon Edit [course] summary Click Edit drop-down beside the top section you wish to change. Edit drop down to change the general information about the course, which displays as Section 0, above the weekly/topic sections.
M2_icons_move_topic.jpg Move [week/ topic] Click and drag the icon to move the section up or down in the list.
Settings icon Edit [week/ topic] summary Click Edit drop-down beside the section you wish to change. Edit drop down To change the general information for each week or topic, which displays above content items in the section.
Highlight icon Highlight this topic as the current topic Adds a distinctive colour to the section background, to mark it as current.
Hide icon Hide [week/ topic] Make the section invisible to students. (Topic displays as "Not available".) Redisplay by clicking Show section .

Section Icons—Topic/Weekly outline—individual items

Icon Icon name Description
Edit title icon Edit title Edit the title of the item. (Note: Turnitin assignment titles may have no more than 40 characters.)
M2_icons_move_right.jpg Move right Indent the content item. (A Move left icon Move Left icon will then display next to the Move right icon.)
M2_icons_move_topic.jpg Move [content item] Click and drag icon to move the content item up or down in the list.
Duplicate icon Duplicate Duplicate an activity or resource.
Delete icon Delete Remove the content item. (A confirmation dialog box will display.)
Hide icon Hide [content item] Make the content item invisible to students. (A Show icon will display. Click it to re-display the item to students.)
No groups icon Groups Indicates whether groups are being used for the content item. Toggles through No groups No groups icon, Separate groups Separate groups icon, Visible groups Visible groups icon.
