Set up Activity Completion in Moodle

Overview

This page has been archived, visit our new Activity Completion page for updated information.

Activity completion is used to add completion conditions to different content in your courses. These conditions will be shown to students and will be marked off as complete as students perform their tasks.

Tip: Follow the steps on the Activity details page to show completion details on the main page. This makes completion requirements much more visible
Tip: Activity completion can be used to provide automation to a course when combined with other features such as the Personalized learning designer or Restrict access

When to use

Activity completion can be used to provide automation to a course when combined with other features such as the Personalized learning designer or Restrict access

If completion tracking is enabled for the course, use the Completion tracking field to indicate whether a resource or activity is to be included in completion tracking.

Benefits

The Activity completion settings provide additional visibility regarding what needs to be done in a course and allow instructors to see students' progress through the course depending on the conditions they set.

Guide

Getting started

Activity completion is available in courses by default. If you cannot find the 'Activity completion' section within the settings pages of your course content, follow these steps to enable it in the course.

Begin by going to the settings block in the course and clicking 'Edit settings'

In the settings page, go to the 'Completion tracking' section and turn on 'Enable completion tracking'

Tip: Show activity completion conditions can also be enabled to show students their completion for each content on the course main page

Step by step instructions

Once activity completion is enabled in the course, all you need to do is go into important content and select what you want students to do to complete them.

After students complete content, you can also view a report of their completion

  1. Select completion requirements for content
  2. View the completion report

Select completion requirements for content

You only need to set up activity completion for the content that you want to track completion for.

To set up the completion criteria for some content, begin by turning editing on in the course and editing some content.

On the edit settings page, scroll down to the 'Activity completion' section. This is where you can select the completion requirements

image-20211215164332-6

Set the completion tracking dropdown to one of the completion options. You have 2 main choices:

  • Students can manually mark: This provides a 'Mark as done' button for students to click when they consider themselves done with the content. This can provide students with guidance and a way to track their own progress through the course
    image-20211215164517-7
  • When conditions are met: This allows you to select criteria for students to complete before the activity is marked as completed. Once students meet the criteria, they will be automatically marked as completed

image-20211215164751-10

There is no further setup for 'Students can manually mark' however if you select 'When conditions are met', you will need to tick all the conditions that the students need to complete to count as having 'Completed' this task.

Tip: Completion conditions are different depending on the type of content you are adding completion for. For example, there will not be 'Attempts' related completion requirements for a forum.
Tip: The date you enter in the Expect completed on fields will show up for students in the timeline and calendar blocks in the Moodle dashboard.

View the completion report

The activity completion report gives you an overview of how your students are completing the content. To view the report, go to the settings block, click 'Reports' and select 'Activity Completion'

Tip: You must have an activity with 'activity completion' turned on before this report will be visible.

image-20211215170029-12

In the report, completed activities can be seen as ticked checkboxes for each content with completion. Only content with completion set up will show up in this report.

image-20211215170425-13

You can click on checkboxes to manually tick them, this will override the student's completion status so that it is always the same as what you have selected regardless of what they have done.

Tip: The completion report can be downloaded as a csv file by clicking the download options available in the report below the table

Percentage activity completion on student Dashboard

When activity completion is enabled in the course, students will see a percentage on their dashboard with how much of the completion requirements they have completed. This percentage is not used to signify official course completion at UNSW.
