Industrial Design Product Visualisation

The possibilities when you bring a technology like virtual reality into the Built Environment domain are very rich with potential. This project allows the Industrial Design (IDES) product models created by the students for their projects to be brought in and visualised in VR. Students can then explore the work of past students by interacting with the 3D digital models both assembled and in their exploded forms. Combined with interactivity, renderings and annotations the experience becomes an interactive one for the player in both class and exhibition/event contexts.

Project Details

The Industrial Design students use Solidworks and Keyshot as the primary digital tools to 3D model and render their product design work. The project code can import these models and generate the components that will be rendered within the VR experience. Interactivity, notes and views are then configured to enhance the effect and value of exploring the design in VR.

Features include: Navigating the suite of products; Grabbing and holding the virtual models; Exploded views allowing students to see components and grab those individually; Sectioning where students can manipulate the dynamic section plane to see the interior and Notes from the student themselves explaining their project which can include their presentation renders too.

TECHNOLOGY & DEVELOPMENT

The active design and development of the project continues in collaboration with Industrial Design staff and students. The staff and work integrated learning student developers are using the Unity game engine to bring together all the elements and deliver the VR experience using our Meta Quest 3 headsets.
