The idea of virtual lab environments has been explored a few different ways. This project created a suite of medical science experiments where the students undertake the sim as preparation for their lab classes and also serving as a catchup option for any students who might miss a lab lesson. During covid lockdowns the simulations were used as the only way the students could get this valuable lab experience. A version of the application for anatomy classes involved scanning of the specimens using photogrammetry and then being able to view the annotated models either via the web or in virtual reality.
Project Details
The lab simulations are used in the medicine program with experiments such as DNA extraction and PCR.
TECHNOLOGY & DEVELOPMENT
The design and development of the project is in maintenance mode now with feedback from the academics, education designers and the students being incorporated into the experience when required. The staff and work integrated learning student developers use the Unity game engine to bring together all the elements via the webgl experience with the VR option as well.
