VR and Simulation Classes

The Virtual Reality and Simulation classes are engaging and exciting lessons for staff and the students. The Immersive Team not only create the bespoke sims and experiences that might be used in these classes but also support all the logistics with running them in either our VR Classroom or out in the rooms already being used for the classes.

Project Details

Classes using VR for simulations or other experience use our Meta Quest 3 headsets. The applications being used are specific to the course and experience needed - some of them are bespoke applications created by the Immersive Team or other units at UNSW, others are third-party or commercial experiences and media which meet the learning objectives.

Some classes just include a short burst of VR in their larger lessons, while others completely transform the learning environment with students in virtual reality for the whole lesson.

The logistics of maintaining the headsets, sanitation, preparation and transport are all handled by the team, this allows the academics to concentrate on facilitating the learning for their students. The Immersive team ran over 120 VR classes, sessions and demos in 2023 with such joy expressed by the students across all the faculties at UNSW from Ophthalmology in Medicine and Health and Journalism in Arts Design and Architecture to Marketing in the School of Business.

EXPERIENCES

"The ability of the virtual reality devices to completely fill my field of vision and in some miraculous way fool my brain into believing I am at least partially there. Completely offered a new perspective on media." Student feedback from MDIA2013 VR Documentary Making course in 2024.

"It was an amazing experience and now I have so many ideas how it can be used - I was having a hard time imagining but now I am sure" Student feedback from MARK2085 Consumer Centric Innovation course after VR session.

The VR Classroom setup in the Teaching Innovation Precinct is very flexible allowing us to configure the space for tutorials with or without the tables, laid out for room-scale VR experiences and allowing easy access to the sanitation, charging, AV and the support team.

Get Involved

Individual classes are supported by the team in the use of VR or Simulations whether they are using the bespoke applications created by the Media & Immersive team or third party experiences. To find out more, get a demo or have your class use-case included just get in touch.
