Dr Kim Lapere's interest in teaching first developed as a postgraduate in 2012 when she was one of 24 students selected at the University of Western Australia to complete a teaching internship. The internship involved participating in workshops and seminars similar to FULT, having a teaching mentor observe her teaching of all levels of undergraduate classes, peer mentoring other interns and completing a 25 hr curriculum development research project. Kim continued on her teaching path when she moved on from a postdoctoral research position at UNSW to an associate lecturer position in 2016. In this role Kim has lectured undergraduate chemistry classes of up to 500, supervised chemistry labs and tutored first year chemistry students. Once the EF roles were announced Kim transitioned as part of the first round, and was later promoted to Lecturer in 2018. Kim also coordinates the Chemistry Teaching Fellows, 12 HDR students who tutor into first year chemistry and mentors them in developing their teaching skills.
Kim's research interests are on improving assessment and using digital technologies in chemical education.
