Dr Karen Gibson, Academic Mentor, Medicine

Dr Karen Gibson, Academic Mentor, Medicine

Dr Karen Gibson is a senior lecturer in Physiology in the School of Medical Sciences. She has over 20 years of teaching experience at UNSW, and in 2014 completed the Graduate Certificate of University Learning and Teaching. She became an Education Focussed academic in January 2018.

Karen is the Phase 1 convenor for the undergraduate medical program and convenes PHSL3221 Endocrine, Reproductive and Developmental Physiology (a 3rd year science course). She teaches across a range of topic areas in systems physiology (particularly renal, respiratory, reproductive and fetal physiology) for both science and medical students. She has developed several Smart Sparrow adaptive tutorials and spoken at the UNSW Medicine Learning and Teaching Forum (December 2016) and at Re-Collaborate (February 2018).

  • UNSW Medicine Teaching Excellence Award, 2013
  • UNSW Medicine Teaching Award - Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning, 2010
  • School of Medical Sciences Awards - Teacher of the Year 2017
  • Contribution to the Student Experience 2014
  • Outstanding Contribution to Teaching in the Discipline of Physiology 2007

  • NBN Best Network Partner Project, Gibson & Vickery - $15000 Regulation of plasma osmolality and volume in human subjects. 2013.
