At times, the darker spaces (where I took this work) offer me a sense of safety and a place for self-reflection. Crossing Shadows captures the essence of my journey as an international student at UNSW. The stark contrasts between light and shadow symbolize the challenges and discoveries that come with navigating a new environment far from home. The composition mirrors the blend of familiarity and unfamiliarity I’ve encountered throughout the two-year academic journey. I see myself as the figure walking through the scene, reflecting the constant movement and transition of my learning experiences at UNSW. At the same time, the play of light signifies the moments of clarity and connection that have shaped this journey. Crossing Shadows depicts the duality of feeling both exposed and sheltered, isolated yet part of a larger community—a narrative of adaptation, growth, and the search for belonging in an academic setting far from one's roots.
