Culturally and Linguistically Diverse
"The expression ‘cultural and linguistic diversity’ (CALD) reflects UNSW’s use of the term as an umbrella for individuals who may identify with or be perceived as coming from a range of linguistic, ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds in a white-majority context. These individuals may be born within, or outside of, Australia.
However, denoting some cultures and languages as ‘diverse’ may reinforce western centrism (favouring western cultures or considering them the ‘norm’ over non-western cultures). Some international students may identify as ‘culturally and linguistically diverse’ and others may not. The use of umbrella terms such as ‘international’ and/or ‘culturally and linguistically diverse’ can be problematic and risk essentialising people’s experiences and identities. Critical engagement with this resource and associated terminology is welcomed" (UNSW ADA Faculty, 2022, p.1).
Note on Language Use
The Universities Accord uses the term ‘Culturally and Linguistically Diverse’ but that is not the only term used within the university context.
Read this article about the difference between CALD and Culturally and Racially Marginalised (CARM).
Another term used at UNSW is Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Migrant and Refugee (CALDMR) students. Read this article on equitable teaching for CALDMR students.
International Students
“Inclusive definitions and terminology continually evolve. At UNSW the term ‘international students’ typically refers to students who are completing their degree at UNSW but are not an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident and most often applied and enrolled from overseas. A student who is ‘onshore’ denotes someone living in Australia while an ‘offshore’ student is someone currently studying from outside Australia” (UNSW ADA Faculty, 2022, p.1).
