“The term 'rural and remote' encompasses all areas outside Australia's major cities. Using the Australian Standard Geographical Classification System, these areas are classified as: inner regional, outer regional, remote, or very remote” (AIHW, 2023).
Students coming from regional and remote areas of Australia have a range of different educational experiences compared to their metropolitan peers. There are various issues that can result in educational disadvantage for this cohort including (but not limited to): greater distance from services and universities, teacher shortages, and needing to move away from community and family to attend university (Baker, n.d.).
Below are supports for students from rural, regional or remote areas.
