Digital assessment at UNSW

Inspera at UNSW

UNSW is committed to providing our community with an excellent digital assessment experience and has partnered with Inspera to provide an end-to-end digital assessment platform that allows students to complete assessments online, anywhere on a PC (Windows) or Mac (macOS). It caters for both formative and summative assessments, improves the student and staff assessment experience and facilitates effective pedagogical practices.

Inspera has been delivering high-stakes assessments for over 20 years across 160 countries - last year alone, more than 260 million assessments were submitted by students via Inspera globally.

UNSW is rolling out Inspera in a phased approach agreed with Faculties and Schools over five terms commencing T2 2022.

By 2023 most of UNSW’s high stakes assessments will be conducted via Inspera, complemented by other specialist e-assessment tools in UNSW’s digital assessment ecosystem.

Student engagement and support

Our students have been integral to the decision to adopt Inspera.

Student focusing in front of a computerBetween T3 2020 and T3 2021, more than 14,000 students have been involved and successfully completed assessments on Inspera across 150 courses during the pilot. UNSW students have said Inspera is inclusive, intuitive, and easy to use. Importantly, using Inspera gives both our domestic and offshore-international students the same assessment experience across borders, securely.

Students can access information about Inspera, including demo test sites and guides below:

This demo test shows what students experience when taking an assessment in Inspera

  • 93% of our students say they found Inspera easy to use.
  • 82% of our students say Inspera enhanced their assessment experience.
  • Inspera continually saves progress during a live assessment.
  • Students can continue working if their internet drops out.
  • Inspera enhances the assessment experience through a range of question stimuli, including images, video, audio, hotspot, drag and drop.
  • Inspera includes accessibility features for students including text to speech, ability to change font and theme colours, and adjusting the size of stimuli for better viewing.

Staff engagement and support

Feedback from our academic community who participated in the Inspera pilot also contributed to the decision to adopt Inspera.

Our academic staff say that using Inspera prompted them to streamline and improve their assessment set-up and made marking more efficient. Their feedback has also helped prioritise additional features we will roll out soon.

Throughout 2022, each Faculty will begin moving their high stakes course assessments onto Inspera.
